Cinnamon Rolls

 

"Dad, can you make that cookie we ate at the mall?” asked my son. He didn’t need to elaborate, we both knew exactly which cookie he meant. We came to the US long before the container that we sent with the rest of our things, so we all went to the mall to buy some basic equipment. Obviously, we got lost. “This is the direction to the houseware store,” I said confidently and started walking with everyone following me. “Are you sure this is the right direction?” my better half asked after walking more then a few minutes without a houseware store in sight. “Yes,” I answered, that’s what was written in the directory. “Dad, what it this smell?” asked my son. A sweet scent of cinnamon enveloped us, we looked around, but couldn’t see where it came from. “It’s the smell of cinnamon rolls” my wife said “do you remember grandma used to make them?” At that moment we forgot about our empty house and the houseware we came to buy, it was clear to us all what our first ever purchase in a US mall would be.

 

 

Ingredients

1 TBS dry yeast

¾ cup warm milk

3 cups flour

4 TBS butter melted

¼ cup sugar

1 egg

1 tsp salt

 

Filling

1 cup brown sugar

2 tsp cinnamon

4 TBS butter soft

1 cup raisins

Egg for brash

Place yeast and warm milk in a small bowl. Let stand until bubbly, about 5 minutes. Place flour and yeast mix in a mixer bowl with kneading hook and stir. Add melted butter, sugar, egg and salt and knead 7-8 minutes until dough is smooth and elastic. Place in well-greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.

Mix brown sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. Roll dough to rectangle ¼ inch thick. Spread soft butter all over dough. Sprinkle sugar cinnamon mix over buttered dough. Sprinkle with raisins and press lightly into the dough. Beginning at the long side, roll dough up.  Cut into 1 inch slices and lay them on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise 30 minutes.

Heat oven to 350 F. brush rolls with beaten egg and bake for about 25 minutes or until nicely browned.
